Wine Grape Education
Grape Varieties
Grape varieties fall into three basic categories: Vinifera, French
Hybrids, and American or Native grapes.
Most wine drinkers are familiar
with many of the Vinifera grapes, uch as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot.
Vinifera grapes are produced in
the U.S. and are sold as grafted vines. The rootstock is
American.
French Hybrid grapes are crosses between Vinifera
grapes and other varieties. Normally, these varieties do
not command as much money per ton. However, they can produce
quite nice wines by themselves and are extremely useful for blending. Examples
of these grapes include Chambourcin, Seyval and Vidal Blanc. Typically,
French Hybrids are a little sweeter than their Vinifera cousins.
American
or Native grapes include Concord and Norton.
Knob Hall Vineyard
will plant Vinifera and French Hybrid vines from some of the best
nurseries in America (primarily from California, though some can
come from New York).
Knob Hall will purchase only Vinifera
and/or French Hybrid vines on grafted rootstock in order assure
maximum quality.
